UL-508A, UL-698A & UL-698B

UL-508A is the UL Standard for Industrial Control Panels.

UL-698A is the Standard for Intrinsically Safe Industrial Control Panels. Intrinsically safe control panels are used to control processes that are in hazardous classified areas containing flammable materials such as gases and vapors, where the control panel is installed outside of that classified area.

UL-698B is the UL Standard for Explosion Proof Panels. Explosion Proof Panels may be installed in Class I, II or III Hazardous Locations according to appropriate National Electrical Code (NEC) installation practices.

Okay, let's talk about UL-508. My guess is that you aren't visiting this site because you want to learn every code it takes to design to UL-508 standards. You are at this site for one of four reasons:

1) Either you need to have a panel build. Great! Then you are at the right website! or

2) You want to find out if you can build and label a panel yourself. Possibly! or

3) You already have a panel and have been "Red Tagged". It could be worse! or

4) You already have a panel and are afraid you are going to be "Red Tagged", so you need to take corrective action and get the panel labeled before you do!

Well Regardless of the reason, Systems Interface can take the pain out of the process and SAVE YOU MONEY!

Our recommendations will normally be -

1. If you need to have it built - have Systems Interface build it. It will be labeled when you get it and the label part of it costs you nothing extra.

2. If you have a panel that has been shipped to you and it hasn't been installed yet, we can bring it to our facility, inspect it, bring the panel up to code by changing out any none UL material, doing the necessary schematics and documentation and then labeling the panel and shipping it back to you. The cost is dependent on the amount of work required.

3. Lastly if the panel is installed, we can inspect the panel at your facility, make the necessary panel modifications, handle the paperwork and then bring in a listing agency to label the panels. Why is this less expensive than bringing in the listing agency first? Well, for starters it is a rare ocassion when the listing agency will apply the UL label on their first visit. If they don't you will need to have someone come in and do the necessary engineering and then call them back out for a second trip. They typically charge $1,500 to $2,000 a trip depending on the number of panels and the size of the panels.

The UL-508 issue comes quite often, so we know how to take some of the pain and cost out of the process.
